CONSERVATION LABORATORY CONSULTANT AND CONTRACT OBJECTS CONSERVATOR
As laboratory consultant for the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments (CHSI) at Harvard University, I was responsible for creating a report that detailed the modernization and organization of the conservation laboratory at the CHSI. This also included developing conservation-themed units to be incorporated into the History of Science curriculum at Harvard University. In this capacity, I have gained valuable experience in the operation and maintenance of a conservation laboratory through my involvement in laboratory materials sourcing and pricing, laboratory layout planning, and the establishment of a program for preventive and remedial object care. Additionally, this opportunity has allowed me to acquire an understanding of how to construct and write grant-style reports.
In my role as a contract objects conservator, I was responsible for the conservation of a Counter-Current Distribution Separator machine, recently acquired by the CHSI. Treatment included thorough photographic and written documentation, consultation, cleaning and reconstruction. During and following treatment, the machine was kept on display in an exhibit area in the Northwest Building at Harvard University. The entirety of the treatment was conducted in this exhibit space where I was able to interact with the public and discuss my work on the apparatus.
